Review of Speare: a block-based writing software

Recently I came across Speare, online writing software with an interesting interface, somewhat belatedly because it seems the software was released back in 2017.

The first impression you get from the software is that it looks beautiful with its modern and clean interface.

I could call it a block-based software because the idea is to write text in the editor at the bottom of the screen and add it as a block into the boards.

Once you add the block, you can move it around inside the board or to other boards. You can export several board as a single document.

The software also supports markdown and collaboration on the same board.

I don’t think Speare was meant for a full-fledged tool for book writing because it lacks the ability to make a Table of Content or a large writing screen where you can write long texts.

However, writing several blocks of text and freely moving them around seems a good method for a long blog post or article.

I like this block-based writing but there is one thing that leaves something to be desired, at least for me. It is the fixed position of the editor box at the bottom. There must be some technical reasons for the developers not providing this feature but I want to click anywhere on the board and write my text immediately.

I think Speare is something you could give a try for its innovative features for non-linear writing method.

Speare works on Web and Smartphones and cost 4.95 US dollars per month if you buy an annual subscription.
