Four free novel software – yWriter, Google Doc, Writemonkey and iA Writer

You’re looking for free software to write a novel? Let me suggest a few that are worth trying.

yWriter

This one does not need an introduction. It is the oldest and the most famous free novel software.

The software started as Windows only program. Currently, it is available for Mac (Beta version), Android, and IOS.

The interface looks rather outdated. However, it is still the best option if you want FREE software that allows you to work on separate chapters and scenes.

yWriter for Windows and Mac is free. Android and IOS version is not.

Google Doc

Technically, Google Doc is not a novel writing software per sei.

However, lots of authors use it to write books because of its convenient autosave and availability for multiple devices such as desktop, Android and IOS.

Writemonkey

Writemonkey is one of the best distraction-free writing software. Unlike its counterparts in the Mac environment, this Windows software has been always free.

Some people say what they most miss after migrating to Mac is Writemonkey.

It looks simple but has lots of features under the hood.

Some of the features that you will like:

  • visual progress bar
  • timed writing
  • markdown support
  • .. and many more.

iA Writer for Android

When it was first released, iA Writer for Mac became popular for the minimalist design and markdown support.

It is a more elegant counterpart to Writemonkey. Maybe because of its elegance, it is not free.

A good news is that iA Writer for Android is free. Other versions – Mac and IOS – are not free.

If you install the app on an Android tablet and hook up a keyboard, you have a great free software for writing your novel.
